The first-years’ experiences, obtained from the production of studies by means of applied research methodologies, brought Irepa to extend its services and technical assistance to the Public Administration. This strategic choice led Irepa to successfully develop study areas to meet the ever-changing demands over time. In the field of the fishery economy, Irepa has gained a reputation as a centre of excellence with a leading role both nationally and internationally. Its researches have become a reference point of the highest scientific level and are often quoted for the contribution to the socio-economic understanding of the fishery food chain.
Following the globalisation process in other economic sectors, the research and the technical assistance to fishery are increasingly integrated. Accordingly, the IT revolution introduced new tools, which led the Institute to re-organise itself to maintain its high competitiveness. The technological changes allow for the development of new services, which have become the core of this rearrangement. The Italian and European fishery food chain influence the economic system and represent a driving force for the development of the productive system. Therefore, the research and the technical assistance developed in this field are closely connected to the sector development itself. The competences and the interdisciplinary character of the Institute permitted greater partnership in research projects and improvement in the technical assistance provided to public administrations. In order to develop a system of support for decision-making (SSD) the records available by the national and local administrative offices were collected and rearranged within a data warehousing system that serves a wide range of analysis. Starting from the observation of available data and informative reports, this approach enables public administrators to make decisions related to the planning activity at different levels.
