Data Collection 1543/00
Council Regulation (EC) 1543/2000I provides for the
establishment of a permanent statistical unit to gather
fishing data relevant to the Common Fisheries Policy.
Commission Regulation (EC) No, 1639/2001 establishes
a minimum and an extended program for the gathering
of such data and defines the condition under which Regulation
(EC) 1543-00 shall be applied.
According to these regulations, each Member State must
submit a five-year national programme to the Commission.
On 31st May 2001, the Italian Directorate-General of
Fisheries and Aquaculture, submitted the programme to
the Commission. The programme was drafted by an apposite
workgroup co-ordinated by the Irepa Director.
Pursuant to art. 5 of the EU Regulation, the National
Programme is divided into the three following modules:
(A) Evaluation of inputs: fishing capacity and fishing
effort.
(B) Evaluation and survey of catches and stocks
(C) Evaluation of the economical status of the sector
The Directorate-General of Fisheries and Aquaculture
has identified several operational units which are to
conduct the project. Among them, Irepa was entrusted
with the task of co-ordinating the whole programme.
The Institute is responsible for the following:
Module A (Input Evaluation), paragraph 2 (Fishing Capacity),
paragraph 3 (Fishing Effort).
Module B (Catches and Landings Evaluation), paragraph
4 (Catches and Landings).
Module C (Evaluation of the Economic situation of the
Sector), paragraph 9 (Economic Data by Groups of Vessels).
