Mazara del Vallo, the main hub of industrial fishing in Italy, will soon become a major  center of fisheries economic studies as Irepa Onlus, the Institute for Economic Research in Fishery and Acquaculture, opens its new branch.

“We want to strenghten bio-economic studies to support Sicilian fisheries and increase the production of regional statistics” says the Institute’s director, Massimo Spagnolo.

IREPA produces statistical data related to the fishing sector in Italy for the Italian Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Forestry Policies. The new branch, to be inaugurated on October 26th, is hosted within CNR, National Research Council, as a measure of the Institute’s strong ties with other research groups on the island.

Representatives of the regional administration, fishermen associations, environmental and biological research groups and local fishery management councils will attend. A meeting with researchers and collaborators involved in IREPA studies will be held as well, to illustrate the new statistical monitoring plan for 2013.
